Bokeh Effect in 3ds Max

In this tutorial we’re going to create a bokeh effect in 3ds Max. The term bokeh is familiar from photography. When depth of field is shallow, part of the photo is blurred. Bokeh refers to that blur or the quality of it. There are a few different methods of creating shallow depth of field in 3ds Max, but this time we concentrate on the ‘Depth of Field / Bokeh’ camera shader which is a new feature in 3ds Max 2011. The Bokeh shader gives us nice tools to control the quality and the look of the out of focus areas.

Compositing: The Perfect Integration After Effects

In this comprehensive tutorial, author Hugo Tromp will take you through the whole workflow of integrating computer generated three dimensional animation with real life footage. This tutorial covers a wide range of subjects such as motion tracking, footage processing, Maya techniques for compositing, 3D in Nuke and color correction. The first day of the tutorial covers the process of preparing footage for motion tracking and doing the motion tracking itself. Hugo will also explain the workflow of a visual effects shot. Enjoy!

Autodesk Combustion

Autodesk Combustion training videos,Autodesk Combustion tutorials,Autodesk Combustion software, about Autodesk Combustion,Discreet Combustion training

Combustion 2008 is the newest version of Autodesk's visual effects and compositing software tool.

Combustion is a computer program "for motion graphics, compositing and visual effects" (Discreet, n.d.). The software retails for US$995 (MacMinute, 2004). It is commonly likened to Adobe's After Effects, and shares a timeline based interface with Autodesk's (formerly Discreet) higher-end compositing systems Inferno, Flame and Flint. This is in contrast to the node based interface used by some other compositing applications.

Since the release of version 2, Combustion includes both node view and time line views.

It has since been replaced by Toxik, which is now called Composite.

Commotion is a visual effects application, originally released by Puffin Designs. Puffin Designs was founded by Scott Squires (an award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic) and Forest Key to market Commotion.
Commotion set a very high standard for a rotoscoping application, introducing rotosplines and offering features like motion tracking[disambiguation needed] and motion blurring for masks. it was the first desktop application to allow real-time playback of full quality video clips from RAM.
Puffin Designs was later acquired by Pinnacle in 2000. After another release, Pinnacle let the program languish. Pinnacle has since been acquired by Avid, who shows no signs of reviving the product.
The last release was version 4.1.
Apple Computer briefly bundled a limited version of the program with Final Cut Pro.

Blender is a free open source 3D graphics application, available under the GNU General Public License for the Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Blender's features include 3D modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water and smoke simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and the ability to create interactive 3D applications, video games, animated film, or visual effects. More advanced tools include rigid, realistic body, fluid, cloth and softbody dynamics simulation, modifier-based modeling, character animation, a node-based material and compositing system, and embedded scripting in Python.

Features
Blender has a relatively small installation size and runs on several popular computing platforms. Official versions of the software are released for Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and FreeBSD. Though it is often distributed without extensive example scenes found in some other programs, the software contains features that are characteristic of high-end 3d software. Among its capabilities are:

1.Support for a variety of geometric primitives, including polygon meshes, fast subdivision surface modeling, Bezier curves, NURBS surfaces, metaballs, digital sculpting, outline font, and a new n-gon modeling system called B-mesh.

2.Integration with YafaRay, a free software ray tracer.

3.Internal render engine with ray tracing, indirect lighting, and ambient oclusion that can export in a wide variety of formats.

4.Keyframed animation tools including inverse kinematics, armature (skeletal), hook, curve and lattice-based deformations, shape keys (morphing), non-linear animation, constraints, vertex weighting, soft body dynamics including mesh collision detection, LBM fluid dynamics, smoke simulation, Bullet rigid body dynamics, particle-based hair, and a particle system with collision detection.

5.Modifiers to apply non-destructive effects.

6.Python scripting for tool creation and prototyping, game logic, importing and/or exporting from other formats, task automation and custom tools.

7.Basic non-linear video/audio editing and compositing capabilities.

8.Game Blender, a sub-project, offers interactivity features such as collision detection, dynamics engine, and programmable logic. It also allows the creation of stand-alone, real-time applications ranging from architectural visualization to video game construction.

9.A fully-integrated node-based compositor within the rendering pipeline.

10.Realtime controll during physics simulation and rendering.
Use in the media industry

Blender started out as an inhouse tool for a Dutch commercial animation company, NeoGeo.[citation needed]

Blender has been used for television commercials in several parts of the world including Australia,  Iceland,  Brazil, Russia  and Sweden.

The first large professional project that used Blender was Spider-Man 2, where it was primarily used to create animatics and pre-visualizations for the storyboard department.

"As an animatic artist working in the storyboard department of Spider-Man 2, I used Blender's 3D modeling and character animation tools to enhance the storyboards, re-creating sets and props, and putting into motion action and camera moves in 3D space to help make Sam Raimi's vision as clear to other departments as possible." - Anthony Zierhut,Animatic Artist, Los Angeles.
The French-language film Friday or Another Day (Vendredi ou un autre jour) was the first 35 mm feature film to use Blender for all the special effects, made on GNU/Linux workstations It won a prize at the Locarno International Film Festival. The special effects were by Digital Graphics of Belgium.

Blender has also been used for shows on the History Channel, alongside many other professional 3D graphics programs.

Tomm Moore’s The Secret of Kells, which was partly produced in Blender by the Belgian studio Digital Graphics, has been nominated for an Oscar in the category ‘Best Animated Feature Film’.

Apple Shake

Shake is a discontinued image compositing package used in the post-production industry. Shake was widely used in visual effects and digital compositing for film, HD and commercials. Shake exposed its node graph architecture graphically. It enabled complex image processing sequences to be designed through the connection of effects "nodes" in a graphical workflow interface. This type of compositing interface allows great flexibility, including the ability to modify the parameters of an earlier image processing step "in context" (while viewing the final composite). Many other compositing packages, such as Blender, eyeon Fusion, Nuke and Cineon, also use a similar node-based approach.
Shake was available for Mac OS X and Linux. Support for Microsoft Windows and IRIX was discontinued in previous versions
On July 30, 2009, Apple discontinued Shake. No direct product replacement has been announced, but some features are now available in Final Cut Studio, such as the SmoothCam filter.

Uses
Shake has been used in such films as Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and King Kong, as well as Harry Potter movies and Cloverfield. It was also used by The Embassy to create a television advertisement for Citroën with a dancing car. Shake was used by Broadway Video for restoring the release of “Saturday Night Live: The Complete First Season” DVD box set. It is also in use by CBS Digital for creating new visual effects for Star Trek Remastered.

Other major productions using Shake include the 2005 adaptation of War of the Worlds, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Fantastic Four, Mission Impossible 3, Poseidon, The Incredibles, Hulk, Doctor Who, The Dark Knight and Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

Shake is also used for video post-production, but in this field Autodesk's Flint, Flame and Inferno systems are usually used in conjunction with Shake for a fast turnaround of projects. Shake's historical strength has been the ability to work better with very high resolution formats such as 2K, 4K and IMAX used in the motion picture industry.
